Logic Audio Platinum is just the sequencer tht Rick uses to put the channels together. But I also think they use Ableton too...
And of course the real stuff to record the patterns.

Is there really that much difference between software and hardware when it comes to sound quality?

Scooter uses Logic as a Sequencer....and they record through hardware. From what I heard, they don't use plug-ins or vsts. They have just about every top notch synth out there, and I am sure their sample collection is enormous because they use a lot of samples in all of their tracks. If you notice, they really rely on samples for effects, vocals, and even drums.

I am sure they produce most of the melodies through synths, maybe even some drums because most house artists use hardware for drums.

VSTs are getting better and better, but they will never, ever sound as fantastic as a JP-8000 or TB-303 ;)

It is :) The production of the TB-303 stopped in 1983. Today, it costs around 7-800€ [used]

Some guys who are very talented and have a lot of experience can create such a sound with z3ta, v-station e.t.c. you would never believe that it's made with software only! =) The hardware can of course mprove your sound if you know how to use it.

Just check: http://www.soultrain.ru/ if you think that i'm talking shit here  The guys from "SoulTrain" are the best example.
I admire what they are producing and I want one day to reach their level of sound design and creative work.

SLK: Of course softwares can sound as good as hardwares, but the TB-303 is a sharp outstanding. I can't believe that any VSTi could imitate it's sound. The good old sounds, hoovers, pads and strings can be outdone with softwares much more effectively and cheaper. But I doubt the 303 will ever be beaten :D

Do you know "Acid Air Raid" from Solar Quest, or "Till We Die" from A*S*Y*S? ;) Now if anyone can reproduce the 303 sound that appears in these tracks - ONLY with software... then he/she is the best software pro in the world :)

Yo, many people say that you can create an extremely cool sound with software too. You can imitate some hardware sounds up to 100 % but some sounds will never sound so good as with the original Hardware like Virus TI or TB303. But when you create an own production and someone say that the leads sounds are not phatt enough then you always have an excuse by saying: "that was my aim that's why it sounds so"

I didn't know about that tracks but I will check them out.

Try the Cellbox of the Korg Legacy Collection. There is a sound called "Ultimate Trance Anthem". in my opinion it sounds better than the JP8000.

That made me laugh, thank you.

About 303 VSTS, check out Audiorealism Bassline and Phoscyon.
They are pretty good sounding.

100% is a little too much... i'd say around 75

You want the best example of sound designing with vst that people here use

Vengeance Sound

This guy is insane.

I've started to do reading on synthesis since taking an audio theory class. I learned about the basics of how sound works, but I am looking to learn more on synthesis, like fm synthesis...I read a bit on subtractive synthesis, and how lfo's work. I am beginning to understand things more.

Little by little.

Agreed, AudioRealism Bassline is a nice imitation with pretty good sounds. But it's knobs can't be automated and that makes it a bit unusable :|
