Snooker

Am I the only one who´s watching snooker? The UK championships are running.
I think the professionals show really fascinating sports and I´m actually thinking about entering a snooker club. Not now but when I have the money to afford it
Is there anybody sharing this interest with me?

Well, I'm afraid I cannot say I'm sharing your interest this time but I've watched Snooker sometimes on Eurosport. I can watch it on TV but would never ever play it! But yeah, on TV it looks nice! We also have a pro player in Finland but I cannot remember his name now... Sorry! :?

Edited: His name is Mika Immonen! :D

Heh, I actually went to York yesterday to see it (not a world away from where I live). And true to form for matches not involving the top 8 (who all got knocked out in the 2nd/3rd rounds believe it or not) they were littered with mistakes, but that made it more interesting.

You went there? Cool!

How much does a day ticket cost? I want to see the World Championships. Maybe not next year but I want to see it.

I think what they´re playing is similar to chess but with physical action.

Well, a 3rd round ticket cost me £7 for half a day (two sessions, a ticket covers one of them), and it goes up for each round of the competition. If you wanted to see the semis or final you'd have to book way in advance.

It's worth it if you can, especially if you get lucky on the day - I saw an amazing match there last year.

I played regular 8ball pool on a snooker table a while ago, it was tremendusly difficult in the beginning but when I got back to regular table my score just peaked :)

I think these prices are okay I expected them to be much higher.
I´m really eager on playing snooker, pity that there are not many tables in and around Siegen and they belong to the clubs.

I must say I´m not very good in the technique yet. I play pool billard frequently and sometimes the balls leave the table and hit other people or roll across the whole room

Do you have a favourite player guys?

Right now I´m watching Carter vs. Perry on Eurosports, quite interesting because the frames are very close. I try not to miss anything, it´s relaxing ;)

I´ve done it! I played Snooker yesterday. Ofcourse I need a lot of practice but I love this game. I even snookered my mate once :D
The bad thing is they charge 6 Euro per hour and there are only 3 Snooker tables in Siegen.

UK Championships are finished. I was looking forward to a long exciting snooker night but it came completely different. They play best of 19. After the afternoon session Maguire was already 8:1 ahead. Right now he completed a 10:1 result, Gray had no chance. So my long snooker night took 20 minutes :(

Im playing since 10 Years ore more pool billard.
I cant play snooker, sorry. But im not bad in pool.

Sometimes i watch it on DSF. Its great to see, which talent some players have :D

But i forgot the rulez from snooker

The only think i know is, when you get someone in a position, he cant make a shoot, he is "snookered". Right ?

And some rulez about the blue and red balls.
Can anyone explain the rules again, please ?

Greetz : T-Force.

I can, I try to keep it short:

There are 15 red balls (1 point) and 6 so called coloured balls:
yellow (2 points), green (3), brown (4), blue (5), pink (6) and black (7). When it´s your turn you have to hit a red ball, otherwise it´s a foul (4 points for opponent). If the red ball goes in you have to nominate a colour you want to hit. It always goes in the order red-colour-red-colour-red-colour-red-colour-... as long as you score.
Your definition of snookering somebody is right. If you can´t score anything you try to get your opponent into a tricky situation, you try to "snooker" him.
If there are no red ball left the "final" starts. You have to play the colours from 2 to 7 points. Winner of the round, called a "frame" is the one who has more points.
Snooker has many strategies and it´s rather complex, which I love.
The balls are smaller and the table is bigger as in pool. That makes it difficult at first but I got used to it now. I hope I can improve my play and enter a club soon.

Also, if you foul one of the highest 3 colours (blue, pink, black) your opponent gets the same points that ball is worth (5, 6, 7) rather than 4. Fouls are committed by hitting the wrong ball, touching it with your body by accident, missing all the balls, and putting the white in. (plus some technicalities like hitting the white twice when you cue through it and pushing the other ball with the white instead of hitting it)

And if you want to get really technical, there's the miss rule...

Thanks for adding that. We forgot to mention that after putting a colour ball it will be placed on the table again, on it´s spot where it lies when the game starts. If the spot is occupied it will be placed on the spot of the ball with 1 point less value. For example if the pink spot is occupied it goes onto the blue spot. If that´s occupied on the brown spot and so on. If all spots are occupied the ball will be placed as close to its spot as possible.
Only in the final round when there are no red balls left the colous stay away.
You can score 147 points if you play a "total clearance" where the colour you play is always black. That means 15 times red and then black and after that all the colours. 147 points in a row are called "maximum break", more than 100 in a row are called "century break".
