Can't you just put your own tunes on to these ipod thingys without even going the whole itunes way?

I use the iTunes software to manage my music on my CD, and transfer my own CDs to my iPod. The basic music managing software is pretty much like any other - but I happen to like it - I used iTunes for my computer based music long before I bought an iPod, or bought music on-line from iTunes.

I use the iTunes store to buy music occasionally - mainly old tracks I like but no longer have, or if I just like 1 or 2 tracks from an album, its cheaper than buying the whole CD
