as people travel all around the globe it will get everywhere.

That's the main problem, it makes it very easy for a virus to jump all over the world.

That's plain stupid I think to panic about it.
Remember the chicken flu from China ? It was everywhere in the news, and it has vanished as it never existed anymore. Now it's the swine flu. What's next ?

The normal flu kills already too many people to mention compaired to those new flus...

Yes, the chicken flu was everywhere in the news, and suddenly it seemed to have dissapeared.....by the way, where in France was the flu found?

Indeed, there is no reason for any panic. That's the last thing we need... They should rather give people sedatives for panic, it's what travels faster and spreads wider than any real threat. :D

I'm a bit worried about the flu too. According to today's news there is one suspicion of the disease here in Finland too now. Let's hope that this is not getting very serious...

The flu has spread very fast.

Edit: This's just in, first death in USA: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090429/ap_on_he_me/med_swine_flu
Poor kid -- but it's understandable a small kid can't resist is very well (I guess).

TBH at that age, if he caught just the noraml flu he could have died. From that article you posted:

Quoted

Flu deaths are common around the world. In the U.S. alone, the CDC says about 36,000 people a year die of flu-related causes. Still, the CDC calls the new strain a combination of pig, bird and human viruses for which people may have limited natural immunity.

So the chances are that if the same child caught just normal flu he could have died... If my calculations are correct that is just under 100 a day... so it could be just as serious as the common flu! (which isn't very serious unless you are quite old)

TBH I think the whole thing is blown way out of proportion. The news is telling us to do things to prevent the spread of this flu that people should do anyway! (Like cover your mouth when you sneeze/cough)

Edit:
Also, he was Mexican - proving that while he died in the USA he caught it in Mexico - where the serious cases are... :|

Oh yes, I damn hate that stuff -- during the bird flu craze they had all this stuff how one should not handshake anyone, try to keep distance to everyone, do work home if possible (in 99.9% cases it's not), wash hands if accidentally touching someone else, etc... I found it all pretty ridiculous. As said, there's flu going all the time that kills thousands of people, and things like this happen yearly. The media is distracting us from something else, like the climate change or economical crisis -- with which it tends to overreact a bit, too. To everyone panicking, just read this: http://www.vancouversun.com/Health/much+knowledge+exaggerate+danger+pandemic/1540616/story.html :)

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know that I am okay. Public life has been basically suspended after May 6th. They want to cut the connections between humans in order to defeat the virus. How do you feel about it. Has it come to your country?
I think Mexico might be exaggerating a bit, but it is necessary to prevent like this. I think this virus is serious, but it will go on adapting and soon lose its threatening appearence, it´s not convenient for the virus to kill humans since it reproduces and lives through us.
In Mexico there are many rumours:
- the government just is creating panic and inventing things because it wants to hide something different, maybe related to the global financial crisis. Well, nobody´s talking about that anymore.
- the virus is not as threatening as it seems, it doesn´t kill more people than a normal flu does.
- the government doesn´t tell us the full truth in order to avoid mass panic. There are many more cases than they unveil.
I don´t know what to think. I still am optimistic that in some days we can go back to normality. Maybe I will have to give classes with mouth protection and rubber gloves, but we cannot let this virus stop our public life for much more time.
I invite you to discuss about it with me. I´ve read and heard so much about it now and I am in the country where it all started. Here in Mexico you could almost call us experts.
Have a nice day. I will, being locked in my house. I decided to listen to the instructions government gave us.

Let's look at statistics...

"Spanish Flu" (or "La Grippe Espagnole") - 1918-1919 -- 50 000 000 deaths all over the world
"Asian Flu" 1957-1958 -- 1 million 500 thousands deaths all over the world
"Hong Kong flu" 1968-1969 -- 900 000 deaths all over the world
"Avian Flu" 2003-2004 -- less then 1000 deaths all over the world

And now we have this "Swine Flu". For now it's about 150 deaths as I know... that's very sad :( But let's hope that the world medicine will win the fight with this flu as soon as possible. 'Cause as you see, humanity have a big experience of fighting with Death Flu epidemics. Less and less people dying. So let's hope the bad death statistics of Swine Flu will not grow anymore.

Don't forget that "seasonal" flu also kills up to 500,000 people a year

If this develops into a pandemic, I think a lot of people will be sick, but most will survive; I think a swine flu pandemic will result in a lot less deaths than an avian flu pandemic would have done, as it seems to be a lot less severe form of flu.

I think the panic and worry could cause more problems that the virus itself

The death count is a bit scary, but ppl will have the antidote in no time. I give about 3-4 weeks more and everyone will be all right. It's just the same hype as it was with the H5N1 bird-flu case.

Definietly... panic doesn't solve anything, other than chaos and even death, under the worst circümstances...
