What's required to become a DJ/Producer?

Hey posse...
Forgive me if this has been discussed before but i need an accurate information on producing music (with software).
Mainly three questions:
First and foremost, how much knowledge of the basic music theory is needed to become an intermediate/amateurish DJ/Producer?

Second, what's the actual difference between producing with hardware and with software alone?

Third, what program do you recommend to get started?

Any other thing to notice :?:
I would be grateful for any helpful thought.

1. None. Although it might be helpful in creating some harmony and structures, but those all can be made with experimentation -- you'll learn to compose/make music even if you know absolutely nothing about the traditional theory. There are more than billion examples of this.

2. I'm not even sure, I don't think there's that much difference anymore -- I guess before it was the quality of sound or something, that the hardware created better and more authentic sound, but I don't know.

3. I started with Buzz tracker but I don't recommend that to anyone -- it could be used to get nice sounds but it was damn buggy and often crashed and blasted wall of noise and scared the sh!t out ouf me. Plus it almost never started, it was really frustrating to get the program open! And then it stopped working for me altogether... So, perhaps Fruity Loops. Would anyone else suggest that? I'm sorry, I really don't know about good software.
 This is a signature.

got Reason 4 the other day.. lovin it.
other than that I use FL 6, Sonar 6 and Audacity.
I got Cubase somewhere around here, as well as Logic.

I mainly, and almost only, use Reason.
I prefer it and I kinda suck when it comes to the other stuff.

These kind of programs are quite expensive. So unless you're willing to spend a lot of money on it, I wouldn't recommend buying them just yet.

There are simpler games such as eJay. I don't know what version is currently on the market, cause I don't use those anymore.
But that kind of programs are very good to start with.

When you feel like you understand how music works. Then you should get one of the more expensive ones.

FL Studio is not that expensive (€ 85) and a good programm to start producing with, I still use it, but want to try Reason some day....
I also have Logic but I can't get any sound out of it.

Well i bought a book about the basic theory months ago and resolved to learn it on my own.It was going well until i felt kind of boring about the matter on hand.So i asked the first question to make sure whether my brain has to be strained to learn the music production, which you stated no need for that( Amen  ).However,i might consider registering for a planned learning course as moving forward with experimentation.
You know, while i'm outside alone walking around,i make short phrases of music in my mind like a mad boy and play it thru my mouth quietly(sometimes loudly ).
I mean i feel the talent and passion for music inside of me.So i want to express it out somehow and that motivates me to make music.

ScoX , i have used Ejay 7 and it was fun and pretty simple to work with but i uninstalled it mainly because the system resources required to run the program was somewhat low.Now there's almost no problem to run it.But do you think i should stick to it until it's fully in my hands? Or as Massive Tudom says,FL is also a good starting point? By the way,no problem with costs of the cited programs,i can get over it in one way or another.
There's also one thing else that needs to be figured out: Musical ear improving programs and methods. Are they really useful or necessary?

Again, any other tips or ideas? :)

try reason to get started.
I don't use it but it's the cheapest solution to get good
quality synths and effects in one package. (sequenzer included)

and one additional thing:
don't give up. it will take LOOONG time to get the stuff like you want to get it.

For any questions.. just contact me via myspace or icq.

To succeed with FL you must have a good amount of money to pay for all the VSTs you'll need, or you must resort to filesharing.. cause without VSTs, FL isn't very useful at all.

Reason is simple in the way that you don't need anything else than the program itself to produce high-quality music.
However Reason does not have VST support, which sucks.. But it's not like you need the VSTs anyway.

Okay.I'll most likely try to get FL, or Reason as an alternative by the next month, when i'll be hopefully on a job to collect the needed money. And if a good deal of cash is earned, i'd consider buying a MIDI keyboard as well.

Thank you mates for your helpful recommendations.

You can get FL Studio for nothing, you just have to search the net. Because Music Software and this stuff is really too expensive for people which don't earn money from the music they create.

It can easily imitate TB-303, hoovers or even supersynths. Just play with the cut/res knobs and the freq finetune. Peak Controller also comes in handy to trigger fast changes.

Don't be a fool, get a sequencer, something like Cubase SX, then you can use all the above, Reason, FL etc as third party instruments, VSTi's.

You won't need any hardware, ok maybe a mixer, some speakers, a soundcard from M-Audio (Good, Cheap) and a microphone if you desire vocals, Cubase SX (If using windows) can handle it all...

If you want to chat: "jeffreyjames80@hotmail.com".

In saying that, if you know your way around FL and Reason you can make very good quality music with those instruments w/out Cubase or the like.

It's up to you, cheers!
