So as may already know, Owl City performed to a sold out audience at the O2's Shepherds Bush Empire last night in front of an excited crowd in London and to thousands watching the live broadcast from around the world. The concert roughly began about 5 minutes after 9 pm, which I presume was to allow users catching the live stream to get settled in and tune in time. Although I wasn't actually amongst the sold out crowd, I actually began feeling increasingly nervous. The fact that it was live definitely made me feel more a part of the concert. Although I had my doubts about not being included, I was extremely pleased to see Adam's interaction with not only the present audience, but to us watching at home as well. I think this was one of the many reasons why the concert was such a hit.


I began to feel immense excitement as the lights went out, and whilst the sound of the tide coming in and out at the beach was playing in the background, I guess it was the suspense that was really getting to me. Then Adam came on to perform a quick drum solo. Shortly after, the entire band came on stage and the first track was played. With an added build up, and a "Hey London, how we all doing tonight!?", Umbrella Beach began. With Umbrella Beach being expected to hit download stores soon as the next UK single on the 17th of May, this was a more than appropriate opening to the show. Needless to say, it was incredible. Adam was dancing aimlessly on stage-- clearly enjoying himself. The crowd also got particularly excited.


The show just progressed so smoothly that I remember not wanting it to end. One of the things I was on the look out for was the apparent lack of interaction with the audience that many critics have been writing about as of late. This was proven to be untrue at this performance, as Adam gave a big shout out to everyone after every couple of songs, extended his arm to the front row, and, amusingly, almost got pulled of stage.;"Wooooooah" he shouted. He also complemented the enthusiasm of the crowd, particularly those on the second balcony. They were really getting into it, much more so than the standing area. It also happened to be Mothers Day in the US, propelling him to shout happy Mothers Day to his mum, "Happy Mothers Day Mum, I love you".


Admittedly, I was trying to hold back waves of intense emotion with water almost pouring from my eyes. More so when he asked those watching at home to join in on the fun. He introduced Dental Care as a silly song, so if we wanted to behave a little sillily, we had permission to do so. Hehe. I wasn't surprised to hear Adam introduce Fireflies somewhat reluctantly, saying "We have kind of a sing along you must know". Let's just say he didn't announce it as upliftingly as you may think-- almost as if he felt obligated to play the track. The crowd went wild though, of course. One thing I did notice is that the front row seemed to know all the words this track, but drew a blank to the rest. Kinda made me wonder why they bothered to buy tickets to a concert being familiar with only one song. I can look past that, as that's not Adam's fault after all. Saying that, there was a lot of "We love you Adam!" from the audience. That's always nice to hear.


The most emotional performance had to be one of my favorites from Ocean Eyes, the song Meteor Shower. This version featured Ronald Reagans speech regarding the Space Shuttle tragedy that took place in the US in '86. Adam has said in the past that the track itself was inspired by the accident and his faith in God, and it was tremendously moving to hear. I actually cried. It was beautiful. I also recollect feeling so overwhelmed during Vanilla Twilight, Dear Vienna and Hot Air Balloon. All being amongst my favorites.


I loved the concert so much that I stayed up till 4 am in the morning to watch it all over again. It hadn't changed for me the second time round either, and made me realize that Owl City really is the greatest musical act I've ever come across. Sorry Scooter, but this performance woke me up to something that is far more aesthetically pleasing; blowing the gig in Hamburg well out of the water. There's just no comparison.

Great to hear that you had such a wonderful and emotional time watching the concert. :) I watched the youtube links you posted and even though I wouldn't call myself a fan of Owl City, I do understand very well what you mean when you're talking about the "immense excitement", the try to "hold back waves of intense emotion with water almost pouring from my eyes" and of course the crying, as I've experienced this all by myself when being on or seeing concerts of my favourite bands. You described it perfectly. It's such an amazing and overwhelming feeling to let go of all this emotion. Something really relieving and wonderful. Great that you experienced this on sunday :)

Great review May!

I too, watched some of the videos. I liked his performance of Meteor Shower. The addition of the speech about the & astronauts was a really good idea. Would have cool if he'd done it on the actual album!

As if to confirm that he is no Rolling Stone or Bowie, he plays "a silly song" about his fear of dentists, called Dental Care. There is something very commendable about a pop singer who's prepared to wave goodbye to his cool by singing silly songs – not that Young has much cool to lose. An unrepentantly wholesome electropop act from Owatonna, Minnesota, his claim to fame is one unfeasibly bouncy song, Fireflies, which paints a childlike picture of "getting 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs". It sold 3m copies, and so here he is, tall and floppy-haired, loping around in front of a sold-out crowd of screamers.


Success came so quickly that Young – a one-man band who works on a laptop in his parents' basement – hasn't had time to get used to being in front of an audience, let alone one that waves cameraphones and clutches at his ankles when he ventures to the front of the stage. He capers and throws shapes like someone testing out brand-new legs, and wishes us a happy (American) Mother's Day, but his frontman act is a work in progress.


What emerges, though, is unalloyed sweetness and optimism. He remembers to say hello to his mother, who's watching the gig on his website, and shakes hands with the kids in the front row, some of whom clearly want more than a handshake. But parents can be assured that their daughters are in safe hands with Young, who's more geeky big brother than priapic rock star.

Great review and I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the concert so much. ;) Their music really touches you and that feeling.. It is truly amazing. 8) There is no doubt. You are a very big fan og Owl City. They are your band. You talk in such beautiful way about them. ;) I can just say that I'm so happy to hear that. They are the sunshine of your life the way music can that be. Great feeling really! 8) Music should be like that and it is like that when you find the right music just for you. It feels like it was made for you, doesn't it? ;)

I always thought Scooter were the ones that lead me to musical salvation, but Owl City has demolished all that I once believed to be something of an unalterable truth. I've stuck with Scooter since I stumbled upon them with The Logical Song, and genuinely thought that this was the artist that I could call my own. That's gone ahead unabated for almost nine years now, only to be replaced completely with the realization that what I've emotionally attached myself to for so long wasn't all that I once thought it was. Owl City has literally enriched my life. I can smile, dance and just happily enjoy myself whilst listening to it. I don't think I can say enough how much of a musical mastermind Adam Young really is. His ability to capture brightness and joyfulness in his music is just incredible. It's so hard to describe! But whatever he's doing, he's got some real talent that has made me fall in love forever.


Now that I think about it, I think one of the main things that has affected me so strongly is the fact that Owl City's music seems to allign perfectly with my bubbly and more often than not cheerful personality. Despite going through some pretty tough issues to do my gender identity at the moment, finding this glistening beacon of heavenly sound has allowed me to cope with things much more effectively. Some would cry that it's only music and that I'm glamorizing it far too melodramatically, but it genuinely means more to me than that. It's something to get up for-- a real motivator to get through the day. In a nutshell, it's magical.

I understand every word what you say. I feel exactly the same at the moment too. No reason to repeat your words. ;) You already said above everything I feel too. So, I don't say at least that it's just music. It is. But the power of right music is enormous. It shouldn't be underestimated. At its best it has an impact you jsut described on the person. I feel that way too. Maybe people who say it's just music haven't ever find the right music for them that would touch them deeply enough. ;) You know it when you find it.

yea, very wise words of both of you :thumbup: People who sometimes say "Calm down, it's just music" to me, don't know what music can do or haven't experienced it yet. It's not "just" music. It is music. There's no better way to transport feelings than via music. It might sound corny, but that's the way it is. :) It's great if one finds that band or singer that means so much to him/her. I wouldn't know where I'd be without my absolute favourite bands, which guided me through a lot of trouble and pain in my life.

Yes, it's the same to me T!M. ;) My life hasn't been too easy either and the right music can be like the right therapy. ;) Music can help us to handle some tricky emotions and sadness and aggressions and so. At least it works that way for me. We just need to find the right music for ourselves as we all are different by nature. ;) And music gives energy when we feel weak. It has that power for people that are musically oriented. ;)

So true Cassy, i know exactly this feeling;) I experienced it many times. When i'm in trouble or simlpy wanna be alone or something like that my "escape" is the music. we even discussed this thing at school;) And yes, acording to my teacher "music can heal, but don't get TOTALLY adicted, because u will run all your life from your problems and "hide" in your "corner" called music. So, it works, but not 100%." But this is not a topic about "psihological healings" so excuse my "off-topic" sentence.
All in all i'm happy that May and other members like you, Cassy, found their music and they are happy and pleased with that music:)
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Splendiferous aren't they? I mean the two tracks 'I Live Alone' and 'Brielle' that Adam has uploaded onto his Sky Sailing MySpace page.

The above article captures the mood of the pieces perfectly when it notions toward them nostalgically taking us back to a more simpler and less complicated time in Adam's life. And you can certainly detect that, I think, in both of the demos already available to us. With the synthpop sound that some would say is too computerized and elaborate, this may be more peoples cup of tea. I'm impressed so far and really looking forward to getting the album in July! It's gonna be awesome baybeh....

Owl City has announced details of a UK tour to take place this November.

The US singer, real name Adam Young, plays a string of dates across the UK, kicking off inBirmingham on November 17. Shows also take place in London,Newcastle, Leeds and Edinburgh, among other cities.

Without a shadow of a doubt! What fantastic news this is. :)


I was just randomly browsing google for the latest Owl City news, and was ecstatically taken aback by a headline announcing details regarding an upcoming UK tour at the end of year. Wow, I am lost for words. I'm sure one of these dates is going to be the most memorable of my life. Something I sure as hell cannot miss out on. As soon as the tickets go on sale, which can't be too long from now given the release of this information, I'll be getting myself one. The closest concert near me is in Birmingham, so I'll hopefully be first in the queue to secure my place at the academy. So November 17th it is! Arghhh!! So excited.... :D
